NEC and ISC8 Team for Cybersecurity and SDN; NEC Expands Its SDN Application Center with Additional Northbound APIs

Irving, Texas – October 1, 2013 – NEC Corporation of America (NEC), a leading provider and integrator of advanced IT and communications solutions, and a pioneer in OpenFlow-based Software Defined Networking (SDN), today announced that it has further expanded its SDN Application Center, which includes SDN solutions built upon customers’ top-of-mind SDN network concerns. NEC will demonstrate integrated northbound APIs from several leading vendors and will feature the recently announced Version 5 ProgrammableFlow Networking Suite at Interop New York, Oct. 2-4, 2013.

NEC will be demonstrating Version 5 of the ProgrammableFlow Networking Suite, the SDN suite that has revolutionized the networking industry. The booth demonstration will highlight key new features of NEC’s SDN platform, including the first-to-market support for the OpenFlow 1.3 standard, integration with the OpenStack Grizzly release, and advances in market-leading SDN performance, scalability and reliability.

Working with leading vendors, NEC offers northbound APIs to help organizations proactively and automatically manage, secure and optimize their networks through their SDN solutions. During Interop New York, NEC will be featuring integrated demonstrations with ProgrammableFlow northbound APIs that can help organizations with their networks through SDN solutions.

Demonstrations will include integration with Red Hat’s Red Hat Enterprise Linux OpenStack Platform (Management Applications); Radware’s DefenseFlow attack detection framework (Security Applications); ISC8’s Cyber adAPT (Security Applications); Armor5 Enterprise Mobile Security (Security Applications); and A10 AX Series Application Delivery Controller (Optimization Applications).

“Organizations make strategic decisions to adopt an open hybrid cloud to enable choice in vendors while leveraging their existing infrastructure investments,” said Mike Werner, senior director, Global Ecosystems, Red Hat. “NEC's ProgrammableFlow Software-defined Network Suite embraces open environments and is certified with the Red Hat Enterprise Linux OpenStack Platform. We look forward to continue our collaboration with NEC to expand options for organizations moving to the cloud through the Red Hat OpenStack ecosystem.”

“NEC’s Version 5 ProgrammableFlow controller represents its continuing commitment to revolutionizing the way networks are managed and to reduce overall networking costs as well as improve automation and ease of use,” said Avi Chesla, CTO, Radware. “The NEC approach allows next-generation networks to host innovative new services and to become part of these services, thus increasing the overall value of the networks for all users. Radware continues to support and develop L4-L7 ADC and security SDN applications that are integrated within the ProgrammableFlow controller, offering these solutions as native network services. With L4-L7 load balancing, and security solutions becoming more pervasive, overall operational and capital costs will be reduced and service levels will be improved.”

"NEC and ISC8 have teamed up to demonstrate a fully integrated network core-based cyber security solution,” said Llewellyn Derry, VP of Business Development, ISC8. “NEC’s ProgrammableFlow SDN product suite, integrated with ISC8’s Cyber adAPT Advanced Malware Detection Service, illustrates how enterprise and government customers can monitor the cyber toxicity of the flows of traffic at the core of their network at speeds of 10G and higher. Combining ISC8’s malware detection algorithms with NEC’s flow redirection capabilities improves incident response times by providing integrated detection and remediation and lowers the customer’s TCO due to the network core-based design."

"We are excited to work with NEC to bring VPN-as-a-Service to the NEC ProgrammableFlow networking suite," said Suresh Balasubramanian, CEO of Armor5. "With the integration of Armor5 service into NEC ProgrammableFlow, enterprises can avoid costly application rewrites and upgrades when they move on-premise resources to the cloud. The NEC-Armor5 Intranet-as-a-Service dynamically connects remote sites to core enterprise and data center infrastructure through a secure, on-demand cloud service, enabling businesses to be agile and instantly meet the needs of global users. We look forward to delivering significant economic benefits to enterprises and data center operators through this relationship."

“We’ve expanded our SDN Application Center to continue giving our customers more choice on network visibility, security, load balancing and WAN optimization,” said Don Clark, director of Business Development, NEC Corporation of America.

Initially launched in 2011, the ProgrammableFlow networking suite was the first commercially available SDN solution to leverage the OpenFlow protocol enabling complete network virtualization, allowing customers to easily deploy, control, monitor, and manage multi-tenant network infrastructure. Endorsed by customers, the ProgrammableFlow Networking Suite provides the first comprehensive suite that includes both physical and virtual switches as well as an SDN controller and applications. Ideally suited for corporate and service provider data centers, the ProgrammableFlow Controller PF6800 provides a cost-effective, high-performance, highly scalable SDN platform.
